Backgrounds, sometimes referred to as walls, are the patterns seen behind the slicing action. They do not affect the gameplay in any way; they just serve aesthetic purposes (As of Update 2.0.0, backgrounds have powers that improve gameplay).

Elite Backgrounds just simply means that one has to purchase these backgrounds with Starfruit Currency. While there are only two Elite Backgrounds in Fruit Ninja (Storm Castle and Cherry Blossom), the free version has three additional backgrounds of elite status: King Dragon, Parchment, and Cloudy Skies. As of Update 1.9.0, this name is no longer applicable.
